GATHERING SHADES:  Catherine Heard and Ed Pien

November 16, 2001 to January 13, 2002

The Museum of Contemporary Canadian Art is pleased to present outstanding new works by well-known Toronto artists Catherine Heard and Ed Pien.  Although these are solo exhibitions and the artists have created separate and distinct installations, both converge around themes related to the universal and contemporary condition of the human body and spirit.

Catherine Heard will present Proverbs of Hell, a coherent, multi-component installation or, perhaps more accurately, a mise-en-scène composed of small figurative sculptures that appear to be interacting with each other in ambiguous poses that suggest they are either fighting or dancing.  The work also includes exquisite, hand-marbleized paper floor pieces and banners that depict minutely detailed painted figures in poses that reference those in works by Hieronymus Bosch and other 15th Century religious painters.  The mood is dark and somewhat theatrical, creating a stage-like setting for a classic struggle between good and evil for possession of the human soul.

Ed Pien also draws inspiration from Hieronymus Bosch for his drawing installation titled Earthly Delights.  The piece will consist of wall-size ink drawings on glassine paper with figures directly referencing those found in Bosch’s famous work, The Garden of Earthly Delights.  These include elaborately painted figures that cavort in ecstasy or twist in agony, and others that appear to be possessed by natural and supernatural spirits common to human experience.  These scenes are visual narratives; stories that depict sites of struggles, more general than specific, and more ambiguous and poetic than didactic or judgmental.

Through the lens of history, both Pien’s and Heard’s works probe nebulous psychic aspects of the human condition as a way of comprehending our current relationship with the shadowy and ephemeral forces that shape who and what we are.

A public reception celebrating GATHERING SHADES will be held at the Museum of Contemporary Canadian Art on November 16, 2001, from 7:00 to 10:00 pm. The artists will be present.

The Museum of Contemporary Canadian Art gratefully acknowledges support for this project from the Ontario Arts Council and the Canada Council for the Arts. Catherine Heard is represented in Toronto by S.P.I.N. Gallery.  Ed Pien is represented in Toronto by the Robert Birch Gallery.
