Message from the Artistic Director
Judging from all the feedback we received, I can only conclude that
the MOCCA Award 2009 honoring Matthew Teitelbaum, the Michael &
Sonja Koerner Director, and CEO of the Art Gallery of Ontario, was a resounding and astounding success. All whom I have spoken to have conveyed to me that they felt that the evening was a unique and very
special occasion, not only for Matthew and his family, but for the
Toronto art community as well. As Matthew noted during his interview with Allan Gregg, "An event like this could not have happened in Toronto
five years ago." We should all be enormously proud of supporting this innovative and collaborative experience.
With a capacity crowd in attendance and extensive sponsorship
from a diverse range of individuals, and participants from the community,
the MOCCA Award 2009 has exceeded its fundraising goals. This was no doubt aided by Matthew's remarkable and generous donation of his award prize of $20,000 back to MOCCA in support of future projects involving Toronto artists. The funds raised from the MOCCA Award 2009 will help
to strengthen MOCCA's ongoing programming commitments and related activities.

The MOCCA Award 2009 event was a complete sensorial experience
thanks to Chef Susur Lee's extraordinary food, Carol Rapp's moving
and entertaining presentation, Allan Gregg's insightful interview, Luis
Jacob's nstallation/stage-set Habitat, and the elegant design of the
invitation cards and the gallery space by Johnson Chou. We are
also grateful to David Blackwood for producing the limited edition artwork Compass and for generously donating his artist fee to MOCCA.
The Museum of Contemporary Canadian Art is sincerely grateful to the MOCCA Award Committee and all of the many people, organizations, and businesses that made contributions to this landmark cultural event.
